Ingredients:
800 grams canned baked beans (drained)
100 grams rolled oats
1 medium onion (about 150 grams), finely chopped
2 medium carrots (about 200 grams total), grated
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon chili powder (optional, for spice)
30 grams fresh parsley, chopped
50 grams breadcrumbs (plus extra if needed for consistency)
1 large egg
Salt and black pepper to taste
30 ml olive oil (for brushing or greasing the barbecue grill)
Instructions:
Prepare the mixture
In a large mixing bowl, mash the drained baked beans with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth but with some texture remaining. Add the rolled oats, chopped onion, grated carrots, garlic, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder (if using), parsley, breadcrumbs, egg, and a generous pinch of salt and black pepper.
Combine and adjust
Mix everything together thoroughly until the ingredients come together into a thick, cohesive mixture. If the mixture feels too wet, add a little more breadcrumbs, one tablespoon at a time, until the mixture is firm enough to shape into patties.
Shape the patties
Divide the mixture into equal portions (makes about 6 large patties or 8 smaller ones).
Shape each portion into a round, flat patty about 2 cm thick. Chill the patties
Place the patties on a plate or tray lined with parchment paper. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up. This helps them hold their shape when cooking.
Prepare the barbecue
Preheat your barbecue to medium heat and lightly grease the grill with olive oil to prevent sticking.
Cook the pattie
Place the patties on the barbecue and cook for 4–5 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and heated through. Use a spatula to flip them carefully to avoid breaking.
Serve
Serve the bean burgers on buns with your favorite toppings such as lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, and sauces like ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise.
Enjoy your homemade barbecue-friendly bean burgers!
