PEOPLE & PLANET

How Bar‑Be‑Quick Helps the People Who Grow With Us — and the Planet We All Share

At Bar‑Be‑Quick, great outdoor cooking begins long before the charcoal reaches your grill. It starts with people, places, and landscapes that matter. Our mission is simple: create high‑quality products that support communities, protect ecosystems, and leave the world better than we found it.

This is the story behind our charcoal and briquettes — a story of regeneration, craftsmanship, and positive environmental impact.

🌍 Transforming a Problem Into a Positive

Across regions of Africa, invader bush encroachment threatens prime agricultural land. These fast‑spreading shrubs reduce groundwater recharge, limit biodiversity, and prevent farmers from using their land effectively.

Instead of allowing the problem to grow, we help turn it into opportunity.

By responsibly harvesting this overgrown bush, local farmers can:

  • reclaim valuable grazing land
  • restore ecosystem balance
  • increase plant and animal diversity
  • improve long‑term water retention

And through sustainable carbonisation, the coppiced wood becomes high‑quality FSC‑certified charcoal — a renewable product created from what was once an environmental challenge.

👨🌾 Supporting Farmers, Skills & Local Economies

Our process empowers local farming communities.

Farmers expertly harvest the invader bush and load it into kilns designed for efficient, controlled carbonisation. Over a careful three‑day process, the wood is transformed into charcoal — a craft passed down through experience and skill.

Once cooled, the charcoal is:

  • collected by hand
  • graded for quality
  • bagged at the source
  • and shipped to the UK

This creates local employment, stable income and long‑term economic growth for the communities who manage this land every day.

🌳 A Sustainable Story From Europe’s Ancient Woodlands

Our briquettes tell a different — but equally important — sustainability story.

They’re produced using carefully managed woodlands across the Dehesa and Montado landscapes of Spain and Portugal. Stretching over 13,000 square miles, these ecosystems are among the richest in Europe.

Here, sustainable woodland management is essential. Coppicing allows the environment to thrive:

  • wildflowers flourish, supporting bees and local honey production
  • mushrooms, asparagus and seasonal vegetables provide food for local markets
  • acorns feed grazing animals, especially the Iberian pig — famously skilled at peeling them

The coppiced wood that grows back becomes the base for our Bar‑Be‑Quick Briquettes, helping maintain the health and balance of these precious landscapes.

🔥 Better Fuel, Better Future

Every bag of Bar‑Be‑Quick charcoal or briquettes represents:
